Near the station: convenience and connections
If what matters to you is arriving and leaving without a thought, the Central Station area is the most practical choice. You step off the train or the airport shuttle and within a few minutes you’re home, with no changes or taxis. From here connections run across all of Puglia: Polignano, Monopoli and the Itria Valley are a train ride away, perfect if you want to use Bari as a base and explore the region.
It’s also a lively area, well served by shops and bars, a stone’s throw from the Murat district and the shopping on Via Sparano. For a work trip, a short stay or a journey built around day trips, it’s hard to do better: everything within walking distance and the train right downstairs.
Murat and the old town: the centre of Bari
The Murat district is nineteenth-century Bari on a grid: elegant streets, historic cafés, the Petruzzelli Theatre, the shopping. Staying here means having the real centre right outside your door, everything reachable on foot and an urban yet relaxed atmosphere. It’s the right area if you want to live the city like a resident, between a coffee at the bar and an evening stroll.
A few steps further on is Bari Vecchia, the white maze of alleys, arches and little squares where the women shape orecchiette on their doorsteps. Sleeping in the old town is an experience in itself: you wake up inside the postcard, with the Basilica of San Nicola and the Cathedral within reach. Bear in mind it’s a pedestrian, lively area, so factor that in if you want absolute silence at night; in exchange you get Bari’s most authentic charm.
Seafront and residential areas: air and quiet
Those who want the sea and a slower pace can look to Madonnella and the seafront: Liberty-style buildings, the Margherita Theatre, the monumental promenade at sunset. It’s a slightly more residential Bari but still very close to the centre, ideal for those seeking the right balance between city life and a breath off the water.
Further out, areas like Poggiofranco offer quiet, easier parking and convenience for those travelling by car or staying a while for work, handy for the Policlinico and the Fiera del Levante too. They’re a few minutes from the centre but with a wholly different calm. The general rule is simple: the closer you get to the centre, the more life you have and the more you can walk everywhere; the further out you go, the more you gain in quiet and space.
