Spring and autumn: the best time
For most travellers, spring and autumn are the ideal times for Bari. From April to June and from September to October the weather is mild, the days are long and bright, and you can walk the old town and the seafront without the oppressive heat of summer. The sea in September is still warm enough for a swim, and the Apulian coast, from Polignano to Monopoli, can be enjoyed without the August crowds.
There’s a practical advantage too: outside high season the city is more authentic and relaxed, and accommodation rates are often better value. It’s the time we recommend to those who want the best of Bari, from the weather to the sea to the atmosphere, without the excesses of high August. For those travelling with a dog or seeking quiet, these months are the most comfortable too.
Summer: sea, events and full heat
Summer is the season of the sea and outdoor life. From June to September Bari is hot and bright, the seafront evenings come alive, the city beaches like Pane e Pomodoro fill up and events multiply. If you’re after guaranteed sun, swimming and nightlife, it’s your moment.
You should factor in the heat, though, which in July and August can be intense in the middle of the day: better to plan visits for early morning and evening, and choose a cool home to retreat to in the afternoon. August is also the busiest month with the highest prices, across all of Puglia: if you’re aiming for this period, it pays to book well ahead, especially near the coast.
Winter: the most authentic, quiet Bari
A Bari winter is mild compared with most of Italy, and gives you a more intimate, true city. The alleys of the old town, without the crowds, show their everyday soul; restaurants are quieter, rates lower, and you can enjoy monuments and museums at your own pace. It’s the right season for those after a slow, authentic city break, or for those coming for work who want to live Bari like a resident.
The Christmas period adds lights, markets and the atmosphere of the holidays, while spring is already around the corner from February.
